This year marks the 15th year that Nestlé Omega Plus® has organised the annual Walk-A-Mile event, in collaboration with Yayasan Jantung Malaysia (YJM). Walk-A-Mile is the longest-running event for heart health advocacy in this country.
Starting in 2001, from 500 participants to Walk-A-Milk 2016 with 3,800 participants, it shows that Malaysian has started to be more aware of heart diseases. As statistic shows that, there is ONE (1) death caused by heart disease for every 15 minutes in Malaysian. It has become the NUMBER. 1 killer in Malaysia and until today, it’s still the number one killer.
Why is Heart Disease still the NUMBER 1 Killer?
Research has proven that Malaysians in their 30s have ageing arteries similar to people in their 70s, WHY? Mainly because of the living lifestyle in Malaysian. Heart Disease does not happen OVERNIGHT. One thing for sure is we’re overtaking sugar and salt in our foods, especially our beloved Mamak! As we can’t avoid going to Mamak whether it’s for breakfast, we think of Roti Canai, for lunch, we think of Nasi Kandar, and the worst, both oily & unhealthy foods are applicable for Dinner & Supper.

“We need to trigger a change of heart and mind set among Malaysians on heart health. One of the main reasons for the rising concern of heart-related disease among Malaysians is our lack of awareness as to how to manage our heart health holistically. You only need to remember three key factors for holistic health management – get daily physical activity, visit your doctor for a regular medical check-up and eat a consistent balanced diet,” said Tun Ahmad.
Simple TASK to Maintain Healthy Heart
15 Minutes Walk Daily
It’s easy to take charge of your heart health. Walking for 15 minutes daily reduces the risk of developing heart disease symptoms (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes) and it could potentially save your life. This is the reason why Nestle Omega Plus, as Malaysia’s heart health advocate, continues to urge Malaysians to be physically active with the 15th annual Walk-a-Mile in collaboration with Yayasan Jantung Malaysia.
“We cannot ignore any longer that more and more Malaysians are succumbing to heart disease at a younger age and this issue is further amplified through a lack of regular exercise, unhealthy eating habits and other risk factors like smoking, which can be avoided,” said Tun Ahmad Sarji bin Abdul Hamid, President of Yayasan Jantung Malaysia.
Chew Soi Ping also presented a cheque from Nestlé Omega Plus® totalling RM30,000 to Yayasan Jantung Malaysia (YJM) towards the continuous support on the efforts and dedication of YJM to educate the public on heart health matters.
During the event, I learned that it’s true we should start educating little kids about heart awareness, we should start take precautions since young especially looking at too many kids are obese these day, parents should play a critical role in controlling their children’s food intake. As awareness can only be raised if everyone play their parts in spreading it out!
