Geelong – the eastern gateway to Great Ocean Road

Melbourne to Adelaide Great Ocean Road Self Driving

Speaking of coastal roadtrip, one of the world’s greatest coastal drives would be none other than Great Ocean Road. Linked by a freeway, Geelong can be easily reach by one hour’s drive from Melbourne.

“The Great Ocean Road is one of the top 20 journeys of a lifetime” – Conde Nast Travel Magazine

Departing from Melbourne at 8am in the morning, it was a pleasant one hour drive to Waterfront Geelong, a very relaxing morning at Waterfront Geelong, it’s just nice to stop by to take a rest and have your breakfast here. There’s steam driven carousel, beach, bollards, swimming pool, restaurants and kiosks that you simply must visit.

Along Waterfront Geelong, you will find interesting sculptures and street art. Do check out Power House Geelong website and pledge your support for World’s Largest Wall & Street Art Collaboration by Powerhouse Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Next, let’s dig into some local seafood.

This seafood cafe is not just the ordinary seafood restaurant you can find out there, what makes it so unique is you will be enjoying mussels and oysters freshie fresh from the farm to you!

The Little Mussel Cafe by Advance Mussel

Advance Mussel Supply is a family owned and operated business that has been farming Mussels in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia for over 30 years.

One of the most interesting menu in this cafe is probably the Mussel Stout! As a stout drinker myself, I definitely find it alluring! They don’t have much to choose on the menu but what you will get is the secret recipe by the chef of the cafe! My favourite will be the Asian Inspired Mussels, it’s a little spicy and it’s really savoury, full of Asian flavour.

There is only one serving size as according to the master chef, the number of mussels they cooked for 1 serving dish is the ‘just right amount’ of mussels to bring out the savoury taste! Not too much nor too less, it must be that correct number. =P

Last Stop of the day – Anglesea

Anglesea is the key gateway to the Great Ocean Road, staying a night here will be a good stop before you begin the coastal road-trip. A great recommendation for those looking to stay at Anglesea – The Great Ocean Road Resort. Referring back to the motto of the resort ‘Adventure starts with a good night’s sleep’.

The Great Ocean Road Resort Anglesea

The Great Ocean Road Resort can work well for any  Great Ocean Road itineraries including as a base near the start of the Great Ocean Road (from Melbourne), at the end of the Great Ocean Road if doing the Great Ocean Road in reverse (starting at the 12 Apostles) from either Melbourne or Adelaide and as an extension to a Phillip Island/Mornington Peninsula itinerary via the Searoad Ferries.

Being located at the start of the Great Ocean Road provides customers with a great opportunity to explore Anglesea, Torquay, Lorne, The Otways, Geelong and The Bellarine Peninsula within 1 hour of the Great Ocean Road Resort or Ballarat only 1.5 hours away and provides customers with significant on-site facilities including an on-site restaurant, Day Spa, heated pool and spa, gym and a trampoline park for the families and in close proximity (walking distance) to the beach, shopping centre and the kangaroos at the Anglesea Golf Course.
